MDA Awards Lockheed Martin $784m Long Range Discrimination Radar Contract

Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract from the United States Missile Defense Agency for a Long Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR).The contract is for nine years, plus options, with the highest potential total being around $784 million. Under the terms of the deal, Lockheed will develop and build the LRDR in order to support a layered ballistic missile defense strategy that will protect the U.S. homeland from ballistic missile attacks. The need for these sort of defense systems is growing rapidly. Potential threats from hostile countries continue to grow as places like North Korea and Iran become more advanced with their missile systems.

The radar will be placed in Alaska by the end of 2020 to detect any threat coming from that direction. Lockheed Martin and the MDA are committed to shoring up the US defense to make us as safe as possible. This continues to be one of the biggest priorities for the US MDA. "The U.S. has a limited number of ground-based interceptors to detect threats, yet the number of potential missile threats - and countermeasures used to hide those threats - is growing," said Carl Bannar, vice president of Lockheed Martin's Integrated Warfare Systems and Sensors business. "Our offering meets the MDA's vision for LRDR by pairing innovative radar discrimination capability with proven ballistic missile defense algorithms.”

LRDR is considered the backbone of the MDA’s defense against ballistic missiles. It is a high-powered S-Band radar incorporating solid-state gallium nitride (GaN) components that can detect threats from incredible distances. It provides acquisition, tracking, and discrimination data that allows other defense systems to lock on and engage the threats. Lockheed Martin beat out other defense contractors, including Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, to win this deal. Ultimately, their experience in manufacturing ballistic missile defense systems for US and foreign governments is what won them the contract.
