Airbus Finalizes Contract with Kuwait

Airbus Helicopters has announced after a lengthy and drawn out period of negotiations that the Kuwait Ministry of Defense has extended a contract for 30 H225M Caracal helicopters. If French media reports are to be believed, the contract is worth more than 1 billion dollars which includes a support, services and training package.

This announcement is a welcomed boost for Airbus Helicopters as they have still not been able to finalize the sale of the 50 H225Ms to Poland which was initiated last April. The details of the potential sale to Kuwait was leaked in June last year and consists of 24 for the Kuwait Air Force and six for a new squadron that’s been established within the Kuwait National Guard. The helicopters are expected to be used for a variety of missions which include medevac, combat SAR, military transport and maritime operations.

The LA Tribune reports that the H225Ms will be delivered with machine guns with the intent for them to be equipped later with anti-ship missiles although it is not clear if the machine guns would be part of the “HForce” package that Airbus Helicopters is promoting now. Airbus Helicopters is promoting the H225M as the first to helicopter to be equipped with this  “plug-and-play” weapons system. Guillaume Faury, CEOof Airbus Helicopters looks back on more than 40 years of relationship with Kuwait and acknowledges that they have the support of French defense minister Yves Le Drian who was present for the signing of the contract. With this latest order the total of H225Ms sold, which includes previous orders sold to Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, France, Thailand and Malaysia, to 138.
